PR & Marketing / Platform
From a misfit Cultural Anthropologist to a PR/Marketing and Brand manager in the music business!
FACT: Well behaved women barely make history – set fire to that flame!
All my life I have been a bit of a rebel. Never did I fit in, nor did I walk the path that was expected (blame it on the parents right?). After high school, I worked my way through Australia and Asia, followed up by a summer in Spain bartending, went back to Australia for a bit, started out on Uni, failed miserably, travelled again, finished that Uni degree (you can’t imagine the blood sweat and tears going into this piece of paper), went to China to study Martial Arts in a Monastery to eventually come back to Europe…
There I was – in Amsterdam – the beating heart of dance music, but did not have a clue where to start. Yet, after attending 100+ festivals and club shows, I did know that I wanted to work my way up in the music industry.
I said to myself: You just needed to get going, fall on your face 5 times but get up 6! So, I started to build my network as a stage manager and artist coordinator in the Hardstyle scene. This led to starting my own company where I took on projects as an artist manager, social media manager and concept creator for artists. Three years ago, I applied for a fulltime position at Mixmash Records as a PR & Promotion Manager and now I have moved to Belgium to work on Platform Agency’s artists. What I do for Platform? I create visibility for our artists by advising and helping them with their brand identity and of course, I work on their PR and Marketing. Looking back, things definitely landed on their feet!
Starting out in the industry I did not have any skills, however, there was passion! I had a hunch that I could contribute something to the industry because I had ideas. I spoke the language of the industry naturally and working with artists on a personal level was like a second nature. So, I took on projects that were way out of my league – battled my way through an industry ruled by men and big mouths, to eventually develop my own set of skills. How? by being bold, forward and most importantly: have fun! I believed that what I could contribute was worth a stage so I positively pushed on. My point being: if you have a passion inside you for something – anything, you have to set fire to that flame. Show your balls, have guts, a healthy ‘fuck this’ mentality and a little luck.
Happy to be at Mixcon to hopefully inspire other aspiring music professionals!
